What is Hematology?

Hematology, which means “science of blood”; It is a multidisciplinary branch of medicine that deals with blood, blood-forming organs and the disorders occurring there. Physicians in this branch of science who work in the internal medicine units of hospitals are called hematologist.

Blood, a vital fluid; It ensures the continuation of life by carrying oxygen, vitamins, hormones, nutrients and antibodies in the body to the tissues. Blood production, which begins in the embryo period, is called ‘hematopoiesis’ in medicine. Hematopoiesis; It is divided into two: medullary hematopoiesis and extra-medullary hematopoiesis. While medullary hematopoiesis refers to blood production in the bone marrow, extra-medullary hematopoiesis refers to blood production in organs such as the liver and spleen. The science of hematology, which deals with these blood and blood-forming organs
